Brazil contains a wide network of plateaus, highlands, chapadas, escarpments and dissected uplands. The Brazilian Highlands form the broadest upland system, while central, western, eastern and southern Brazil contain many smaller relief units with different rocks, elevations and surface forms.
Brazil is not occupied by one continuous plateau. Elevated terrain covers much of the interior, east and south, but it is divided by river valleys, depressions, mountain belts and lower plains. Brazilian relief maps therefore use several terms—planalto, chapada, serra, depressão and planície—to separate different types of raised and lowered terrain.
The broadest name is the Brazilian Highlands, or Planalto Brasileiro. Within and around this large upland system are the Central Brazilian Plateau, Paraná Basin plateaus, eastern mountain-and-plateau belts, and western interior uplands associated with Mato Grosso. These names describe different geographic scales rather than equivalent plateau units.

Brazilian plateau names operate at several scales. The Brazilian Highlands cover a very large part of the country, while Parecis and Guimarães are regional relief units. The Pantanal and major river depressions lie below these uplands and should not be included simply because they occur in the same states.
How Brazil’s Plateau Regions Fit Together
Brazilian relief is dominated by old continental surfaces that have been repeatedly uplifted, weathered and dissected. Instead of one high central tableland, the country contains numerous plateau remnants and regional uplands separated by lower depressions and river valleys.
The Amazon lowlands occupy much of northern Brazil. South and east of them, elevated terrain becomes much more widespread. Central Brazil contains broad watershed plateaus, eastern Brazil contains highlands and escarpments near the Atlantic margin, and southern Brazil contains extensive plateau surfaces associated with the Paraná Basin.
Western-central Brazil adds another pattern. Mato Grosso contains several separate plateau and chapada units beside lower depressions and the Pantanal. The name Mato Grosso Plateau is therefore useful only as a broad regional expression; detailed maps divide the area into several distinct landforms.
The Brazilian Highlands as a Broad Upland System
The Brazilian Highlands form a large elevated region extending across central, eastern, southeastern and southern Brazil. The name does not refer to one level plateau or one geological unit. It groups together old crystalline uplands, sedimentary plateaus, volcanic surfaces, mountain belts, escarpments and deeply dissected terrain.
Some parts consist of broad rolling surfaces. Others contain steep ridges or abrupt escarpments. Rivers have cut through many older surfaces, leaving a patchwork of higher interfluves and lower valleys rather than a continuous tabletop.
This broad scale is what separates the Brazilian Highlands from individual regional plateaus. The Central Brazilian Plateau, parts of the Paraná Basin uplands and several eastern highland systems belong within the wider elevated geography of Brazil, but each has its own local relief and geology.
The Central Brazilian Plateau
The Central Brazilian Plateau occupies much of the central interior around Goiás, the Federal District and neighboring areas. Broad upland surfaces are divided by valleys and drainage divides rather than by a single mountain wall.
Its location near the center of the country gives it an important watershed position. Rivers leaving the central uplands eventually join different continental drainage systems, which makes the region easy to recognize on hydrographic maps as well as relief maps.
The Central Brazilian Plateau should be treated as a regional component of the wider Brazilian Highlands rather than as another name for the whole system.
Southern Plateaus of the Paraná Basin
Southern and southeastern Brazil contain extensive plateau country associated with the Paraná sedimentary basin. These uplands differ from many central and eastern crystalline terrains because large areas include sedimentary layers and volcanic rocks.
Stepped relief, escarpments and broad plateau surfaces occur across this belt. Resistant rock layers can preserve elevated caps while rivers cut into weaker material below.
This southern plateau country is one reason the Brazilian Highlands cannot be assigned one geological origin. The broader highland region crosses ancient crystalline terrain, sedimentary basins and volcanic provinces.
Eastern Highlands and Escarpments
Eastern and southeastern Brazil contain elevated terrain associated with systems such as the Serra do Mar, Serra da Mantiqueira, Serra do Espinhaço and Serra do Caparaó. These are mainly mountain or ridge systems rather than individual plateaus, but they form part of the wider eastern upland zone.
The Atlantic-facing margin often has stronger local relief than the broad interior plateaus. High ground can fall sharply toward coastal plains, while inland slopes descend more gradually toward major river basins.
The distinction between plateau and mountain is therefore especially important in eastern Brazil. A large highland system can contain both broad plateau surfaces and steep mountain relief without those terms becoming interchangeable.
Mato Grosso Uplands
The term Mato Grosso Plateau is often used for the raised interior terrain of western-central Brazil, but the state itself contains several different relief units. These include the Planalto dos Parecis, Chapada dos Parecis, Planalto dos Guimarães, other uplands and ridges, lower depressions, and part of the Pantanal.
At country scale, the Mato Grosso uplands are best understood as a group of plateau and chapada surfaces separated by lower terrain. They form important drainage divides between northern, eastern and southern river systems, but no single elevation, rock type or plateau boundary represents the whole region.
Common Mix-Up
Mato Grosso state is not one plateau. Political boundaries include both elevated and low-lying terrain. The broad Mato Grosso Plateau label should not replace individual mapped units such as Parecis and Guimarães or lowlands such as the Pantanal.
Parecis and Guimarães Within the Western Interior
The Planalto dos Parecis forms one of the main elevated surfaces in western-central Brazil. It extends across parts of Mato Grosso and toward Rondônia and is associated with broad sedimentary uplands cut by river systems. Chapada surfaces occur within the wider regional relief.
Farther southeast, the Guimarães uplands form another recognizable plateau landscape. Sandstone surfaces end locally in escarpments and dissected margins above lower terrain around Cuiabá.
These regions illustrate why Mato Grosso should be read as several related uplands rather than one continuous plateau. Their detailed geology, individual elevation ranges, escarpments and drainage systems belong to the named-region scale.
The Pantanal Is a Lowland Beside the Plateaus
The Pantanal lies below plateau and upland areas in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is a large alluvial floodplain associated with the upper Paraguay River system, not a plateau.
Its relationship with nearby high ground is mainly hydrological and sedimentary. Rivers descend from surrounding uplands, lose gradient and enter the much flatter Pantanal basin. Water and sediment that originate on plateau catchments can therefore move into the floodplain.
This plateau-to-lowland transition is useful for reading Brazilian relief because it shows how adjacent landforms can belong to very different geomorphic categories.

Brazil’s Plateau Geology Is Not Uniform
Brazilian plateau landscapes occur on several different geological foundations. Large areas of eastern and central Brazil expose ancient crystalline rocks, while other plateau surfaces lie above large sedimentary basins. Southern Brazil also contains extensive volcanic rocks associated with the Paraná Basin.
This creates three broad geological settings:
- Ancient crystalline uplands across many central and eastern areas.
- Sedimentary plateaus and chapadas where nearly horizontal rock layers preserve broad elevated surfaces.
- Volcanic-capped plateau country across parts of southern Brazil.
Long weathering and river erosion have modified all of these settings. Plateau surfaces can become deeply dissected while still remaining recognizable as regional high ground.
Chapadas Within Brazil’s Plateau Landscape
The Portuguese term chapada is widely used for tableland landscapes with broad upper surfaces and marked margins. Many chapadas occur on sedimentary rocks where resistant horizontal or gently dipping layers maintain relatively level tops.
A chapada is usually smaller and more visually distinct than a broad highland system such as the Brazilian Highlands. It may occupy part of a larger planalto, and its edges can form cliffs or escarpments above surrounding lower terrain.
This scale difference explains why names such as Chapada dos Parecis and Chapada dos Guimarães should not be treated as equivalents of the whole Brazilian Highlands.
Plateaus and Brazil’s Major Drainage Divides
Raised terrain across Brazil separates several of South America’s major drainage systems. Broad uplands rather than single mountain ridges often form these divides.

The detailed position of each watershed depends on local relief. A broad plateau can contain several headwater zones, and rivers may cut deeply into the same surface that originally separated their drainage basins.
Elevation Varies Across the Brazilian Uplands
No single elevation represents the Brazilian Highlands. Some interior plateaus stand only several hundred metres above sea level, while southeastern mountain-and-highland sectors rise far higher.
The same variation occurs within Mato Grosso. Broad plateau surfaces, chapadas, dissected margins and lower depressions occupy different elevation levels within relatively short distances.
For this reason, elevation is most useful when attached to a named regional unit rather than to broad labels such as Brazilian Highlands or Mato Grosso Plateau. A mountain summit within an upland system should also not be presented as the height of the plateau as a whole.
Elevation Note
Plateau elevation and summit elevation describe different measurements. Brazil’s broad highland systems contain mountain peaks, lower valleys and plateau surfaces at many different heights.
Climate and Biomes Across Plateau Regions
Brazil’s plateaus cross several climate and vegetation zones. Elevation affects local temperature and rainfall, but latitude, distance from the Atlantic, regional circulation and position relative to the Amazon also shape environmental conditions.

Biome boundaries do not follow plateau boundaries exactly. Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Amazonian forest and southern vegetation zones can each cross several relief types.
Plateau, Chapada, Serra, Depression and Plain
Brazilian relief terminology separates landforms by regional shape and geomorphic position rather than by elevation alone.

Classification Note
A country-level list should keep the Brazilian Highlands as the broad upland system and treat Mato Grosso, Parecis, Guimarães and other named areas according to their own geographic scale. Combining all of them as equivalent plateaus produces a misleading picture of Brazilian relief.
