Canada • Plateau Geography

Canada’s plateau landscapes occur within several larger physical regions rather than forming one national plateau belt. The western Cordillera contains the Yukon Plateau and related interior plateaus, while eastern Canada contains older Shield plateaus and uplands across Labrador and the wider Quebec–Labrador region.

Canadian plateau terminology operates at several geographic scales. Some names identify large physiographic regions, others refer to smaller plateau divisions, and some appear in ecological classification rather than national physiographic mapping. This distinction is especially important in Yukon and Labrador, where similar names can belong to different mapping systems.

The Yukon Plateau is a named plateau region within northwestern Canada’s Cordilleran interior. Labrador is different: its raised terrain is divided among several plateaus, uplands, highlands and mountain regions within the Canadian Shield rather than forming one uniformly bounded plateau of the same rank.

Common Mix-Up

Yukon Plateau and “Labrador Plateau” should not be treated as matching national units. Yukon Plateau is a named western plateau region. Labrador contains several named plateau and highland units within a much larger Shield landscape.


Canada’s Plateaus Belong to Different Physical Regions

Canada’s plateau landscapes are distributed across a country with several large physiographic regions. Plateau names therefore need to be interpreted within their larger setting rather than placed into one national hierarchy.

In the northwest, Yukon plateaus form part of the Canadian Cordillera, where broad uplands occur beside mountain belts, trenches and major valleys. In eastern Canada, Labrador plateau country belongs to the Canadian Shield, where old bedrock surfaces, glacial basins, lakes and subdued uplands dominate much of the relief.

These two settings produce different plateau forms. Yukon commonly shows stronger river incision and more direct contact with mountain systems. Labrador has broader Shield surfaces broken by glacial depressions, lakes, hills and regional highlands.

Plateau Geography in Yukon

The Yukon Plateau occupies a large part of the interior Yukon landscape. It is not a level tableland. Broad uplands are divided by river valleys, ridges, basins, trenches and neighboring mountain terrain.

Several smaller named plateaus occur within or beside this wider setting. Stewart, Lewes, Teslin and Nisutlin are used for particular regional landscapes, while the Klondike Plateau is another named plateau region in western Yukon.

These names should remain at their own geographic scale. A country overview can place them within Yukon’s plateau geography without treating each one as an independent national-scale plateau system.

Yukon Plateau North and Central Are Classification Labels

Yukon Plateau North and Yukon Plateau Central appear in ecological mapping, but their names should not be interpreted as a simple north-and-central subdivision of one physiographic plateau.

Ecological regions can include more than one landform type. Plateau surfaces may occur alongside trenches, lowlands, mountain terrain and river valleys within the same mapped ecological area.

This is why a Canadian plateau inventory needs to distinguish a physiographic plateau name from an ecoregion whose name contains the word plateau.

Stewart, Lewes, Teslin and Nisutlin Plateaus

The named plateau regions of interior Yukon help divide a very large and varied landscape into smaller physiographic units.

The boundaries and relationships between these names depend on the map and classification system being used. Their value at country scale is to show that Yukon plateau country is divided into several regional landform units rather than one unbroken surface.

Plateau Geography in Labrador

Labrador belongs to the Canadian Shield and has a different plateau pattern from Yukon. Broad raised surfaces occur across the region, but national and regional maps divide them into several plateaus, uplands, hills, highlands and mountains.

The names George Plateau, Hamilton Plateau and Mécatina Plateau identify separate parts of this wider Shield terrain. Northern Labrador also contains stronger highland and mountain relief, while lower plateau surfaces and wet uplands occur farther south.

For country-level geography, Labrador is therefore better presented as plateau country made of several named units rather than as one equivalent counterpart to the Yukon Plateau.

George, Hamilton and Mécatina Plateaus

The George Plateau belongs to northern Labrador’s wider Shield landscape. It represents broad bedrock upland terrain associated with northern plateau and highland relief.

The Hamilton Plateau occurs farther south within Labrador’s Shield country. Its position places it among lower and more subdued uplands than the rugged northern mountain regions.

The Mécatina Plateau belongs to the southeastern Shield setting. It extends within the broader Quebec–Labrador physical region, so provincial boundaries should not be used to redefine its landform limits.

These names are useful because they prevent the entire Labrador interior from being reduced to a single “Labrador Plateau” unit.

Other Quebec–Labrador Shield Plateau Names

Plateau terminology continues westward across the wider Quebec–Labrador Shield. Names such as the Caniapiscau Plateau and Lake Plateau belong to this broader physiographic setting.

They provide regional context for Labrador but should not automatically be listed as plateaus of Newfoundland and Labrador. Physical-region boundaries and provincial boundaries describe different things.

Classification Note

A plateau can extend across an administrative boundary, while another similarly named unit may lie entirely outside it. Country and provincial inventories should follow the actual geographic classification rather than grouping every nearby Shield plateau under Labrador.

Eagle River Plateau Uses a Different Classification Scale

Eagle River Plateau is used for a southeastern Labrador ecological landscape. It describes low upland terrain where wetlands, pools, peatland and glacial deposits are prominent.

Its inclusion in a Canadian plateau reference needs a classification label because it does not occupy the same level of the physiographic hierarchy as names such as Yukon Plateau or George Plateau.

This distinction also applies elsewhere in Canada: similar wording does not guarantee that two mapped regions were defined for the same purpose.

Why Plateau Boundaries in Canada Can Be Difficult to Compare

Canadian plateau names come from different mapping traditions. Physiographic maps classify terrain by relief and geological history, while ecological maps may group areas according to combinations of landform, climate, vegetation, soils and other environmental traits.

A plateau name can therefore appear in several contexts without describing exactly the same boundary. This is particularly clear in Yukon, where ecological names such as Yukon Plateau North coexist with physiographic names such as Stewart Plateau and Teslin Plateau.

Labrador presents a related issue. Broad informal descriptions of a Labrador plateau can overlap with more precise physiographic units such as George, Hamilton and Mécatina.

The safest country-level structure is to identify the classification system, geographic scale and parent physical region of each name rather than forcing all plateau labels into one nested list.

Glaciation Across Canadian Plateau Country

Glacial modification is widespread across Canadian plateau landscapes, but its expression differs by region. Ice widened valleys, scoured bedrock, excavated depressions and redistributed sediment across many plateau surfaces.

Labrador’s Shield terrain commonly shows a strong glacial imprint through lake basins, exposed rock surfaces, wetlands and glacial deposits. In Yukon, the effect varies more sharply from one plateau sector to another, with strongly glaciated landscapes occurring beside areas with different glacial histories.

At country scale, glaciation helps explain why Canadian plateaus often lack the simple flat-topped appearance associated with some arid plateaus. Older elevated surfaces have been modified by rivers, frost, ice and long erosion.

Drainage Reflects the Different Plateau Settings

Yukon and Labrador also differ in the way water organizes their plateau landscapes.

Yukon plateau country is strongly divided by long river valleys. Major drainage corridors separate broad uplands into ridges and plateau blocks and connect much of the interior to larger river systems.

Labrador has a more lake-rich Shield pattern. Glacially modified bedrock contains numerous depressions occupied by lakes, ponds and wetlands, while rivers connect these basins and descend toward larger valleys and coastal outlets.

Canada’s plateau inventory works best when broad physical regions, individual plateau units and ecological labels remain separate. Similar names do not mean that the mapped units have the same scale or classification.
